Day 1 – Arrival in Palermo

Independent arrival in Palermo by plane.
Transfer by coach to accommodation in category 4*.

In the afternoon, walking tour of the city: Piazza Pretoria and the Palazzo delle Aquile, the churches of Martorana and San Cataldo, the Quattro Canti.

Palermo was a Phoenician, Greek and Roman city, an Arab capital, a land of conquest for the Normans, Swabians, French and Spanish. Centuries of history and dominations have marked the Sicilian capital, a city of a thousand faces, a crossroads of peoples, a blend of different cultures and traditions, beautiful and fascinating.

Church of the Martorana and San Cataldo, built in 1143, despite the transformations of the 16th and 17th centuries such as the baroque façade, this fascinating sacred building retains the original Arab-Norman style. The central point of all the mosaic decoration is the image of Christ Pantocrator surrounded by archangels, apostles, saints and prophets. The cycle is completed by the mosaics with the Nativity of Jesus, the Transit of Mary, the Annunciation and the Presentation at the Temple. Right next to the Martorana, don't miss a visit to the church of San Cataldo, with its arabesque red domes, founded around 1200.

Welcome dinner at a selected restaurant.

Return to the hotel on foot.

The Fontana Pretoria, built in the 16th century by the sculptor Camilliani for the Florentine villa of Don Pietro di Toledo and later purchased by the Senate of Palermo. In 1581 the monumental Renaissance fountain was moved to the beautiful Piazza Pretoria. A few meters from the Fountain is “I quattro Canti”, one of the most scenic and photographed corners of Palermo. It is the intersection between Via Maqueda and Via Vittorio Emanuele, two fundamental streets of Palermo. The construction of Via Maqueda, in 1600, divided the city into four “Mandamenti” and therefore, at the intersection, four cantoniere houses from which the name of the square comes.

Day 2 – Musical Palermo

Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: visit to the Norman Palace with the Palatine Chapel, the Church of S. Giovanni degli Eremiti, and then the Cathedral.

The Norman Palace, also known as the Royal Palace, is the oldest royal residence in Europe, home to the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Sicily and imperial seat with Frederick II and Corrado IV. On the first floor is the Palatine Chapel. It is one of the most visited monuments on the island. Since 3 July 2015 it has been part of the World Heritage (UNESCO) as part of the serial site "Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale". The aggregate of the buildings takes the shape of an inverted fork, the two southern arms of the bifurcation intersect the artifacts of the Palatine Chapel which originate two large internal courtyards. Multiple styles blend on the various orders and on the numerous facets of the various perspectives. The Romanesque, Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Neo-Gothic, Chiaramonte, Renaissance, Baroque styles mix elements with a strong sensory and emotional impact..

Free dinner.

Afternoon: MUSIC SALON by the musicologist, at the Grand Hotel et Des Palmes, where Wagner stayed and where the third act of Parsifal begins.
Through the story and the piano, she will expose aspects of the great German composer's stay in Palermo.

Grand Hotel et Des Palmes - Art, tradition and glamour in the heart of Palermo
Historic icon of Palermo hospitality, discover the emotion of walking through the rooms of the ancient residence of the Ingham-Whitaker family and stopping to admire the fascinating details of the sumptuous lobby with its high frescoed ceilings and the original Art Nouveau windows, and the Winter Garden, the work of the genius of the architect Ernesto Basile, an illustrious exponent of modernism and Art Nouveau.

Aperitif in the Winter Garden.

Free dinner

Day 3 – Monreale (45km)/ Villa Tasca

Breakfast at the hotel.
Morning: Departure by coach to Monreale and visit to the Cathedral with the imposing figure of Christ Pantocrator.

The Cathedral of Monreale, an heritage of art and culture for all of humanity, includes among the most important architectural and mosaic works of the city, created by the Norman king William II, known as the Good (reigned from 1172 to 1189). The Cathedral is divided into three main volumes characteristic of Western churches with a Latin cross plan, to which are added two bell towers that enclose the colonnaded entrance portico, surmounted by a triangular tympanum, according to the typical layout of the churches of Normandy. The surfaces are decorated with scenes inspired by the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Free lunch in Palermo.

In the afternoon, transfer by coach to Villa Tasca, a place that made Wagner and Goethe fall in love.
Visit to the historic garden and the main floor.

PRIVATE CONCERT in the hall of the main floor.

Villa Tasca, 500 years of history in the heart of the city
Villa Tasca is located in an 8-hectare park full of citrus groves and centuries-old trees on the road from Palermo to Monreale. While the Villa is of sixteenth-century origin, the oasis that protects it is one of the most emblematic gardens of nineteenth-century Sicilian Romanticism. The interiors of the building, large and bright, are characterized by frescoes and majolica depicting rock scenes, thus transmitting the same balance of liveliness and serenity that is found in the garden. A historic residence in which guests will be immersed in the atmosphere transformed into music by composers such as Wagner or Verdi.

At the end, aperitif. Free dinner.

Day 4 – Palermo and departure
